Title: Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition (March 2004)
Author:
Publisher: O'Reilly
ISBN: 0-596-00525-3
Review:

I asked to review Eric Meyer’s “Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition”, because I finally decided to implement CSS in my web pages. I could no longer resist the promise of reduced maintenance time, not to mention the neater (faster loading) code.

I really enjoyed this book. It has been a godsend in learning to use CSS! I was a little apprehensive about learning CSS, but I found Eric Meyer’s writing style easy to read. This helped make the concepts easier to understand and put into use. I can honestly say that until I read this book, I didn’t realize how much you could do with CSS, and how powerful it could be.

Sometimes with tech books, I’ll skip to certain sections and leave the rest for later reference. While “Cascading Style Sheets” does make an excellent reference book, if you’re just starting out with CSS, I think it’s important to read through the whole book. For those who may have held off purchasing the first edition of the book, the second edition covers CSS2 and CSS2.1.

I found the section on pseudo-classes and pseudo-elements really interesting. One neat trick I learned was how to use the :hover pseudo-class to add a simple mouseover effect on a page.

The author provides many tips and warnings throughout the chapters, including information on how the different browsers handle CSS. Another plus is the great property reference appendix. This is really handy when you need a quick look-up.

If you want to learn more about CSS and how to use it in your web pages, you need to get a copy of “Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition”.
